Johnstons chart another success

Quantity Surveying firm, Johnstons, celebrated their 50th year in business whilst working on the University of Central Lancashire‟s (UCLan) Westlakes Campus extension and refurbishment project.

Costing £5m, the Samuel Lindow Building was designed to bring state-of-the-art teaching facilities to West Cumbria supporting the nuclear and renewable energy industries. The Campus, which has expanded by about 30 per cent, caters for 300 students and facilities include a Business Incubator, lecture theatre, wet laboratory and wind turbine!

Johnstons provided support over a two year period to UCLan as Partner, Gordon Clark, explains We were appointed in early 2007 to develop feasibility stage cost estimates and later that year were appointed to provide full Quantity Surveying and CDM Co-ordinator services; ensuring UCLan‟s commercial, contractual as well as health and safety interests were protected.”

Project Architect, Mark Deverill praised Johnstons‟ cost control and management skills “The final account was £2,000 below the cost estimate prepared at the second feasibility stage in December 2007 for the building only, an impressive achievement!”

In September, the Company was praised by another client for “their hard work and dedication” at the official launch of their new facility. James Fisher Nuclear Services (JFNS) had appointed Johnstons to provide Quantity Surveying and CDM Co-ordinator services during the construction of their Rig Hall at Egremont, representing an investment by JFNS of more than £2m by the Company. Working closely with the client team, Johnstons significantly contributed to delivery of the project, under budget and ahead of schedule.

Johnstons was founded by William Johnston, FRICS in Carlisle in 1959 and has since expanded throughout the North of England and South of Scotland. Gordon Clark and

Alan Robinson, both Chartered Quantity Surveyors, became Partners in the practice in 1999 and building long term relationships is important to them. The Company‟s first client was HM Prisons now know as The Ministry of Justice and Johnstons have continued to support them over the last 50 years.
